All meetings and events are facilitated by volunteers, and any interested Northamptonite or Valley resident is invited to join us: attend a meeting or event, or join our email listserv, Discord server, and/ or Facebook group. Individuals can join the national Strong Towns organization with a donation of any amount, if interested, but membership in the national organization is not required to be involved with Strong Towns Northampton, and we do not collect dues either. We are 100% local in terms of our volunteers, our interests, and our operations.
Monthly Meetings
Strong Towns Northampton meets the first Tuesday of every month from 7:00-8:30. Meetings open at 6:30 so that we have time to informally talk before the meeting agenda. Most meetings have a guest speaker or a presentation by one of our attendees, and meeting topics are shared via the listserv. Currently STN holds our monthly meetings at the Northampton Police Station’s Community Room.*
Mobility Working Group Meetings
Meets once a month over Zoom. Discussions are related to safe and inviting transportation and limiting car-dependency in Northampton.
"Walk & Talk"/Audit Events
In-person events which take place throughout Northampton, inviting participants to discuss what is/isn't working in the physical environment. Highly encouraged for all members of the community. RSVP to strongtownsnorthampton@gmail.com.
Other
Occasional social events, block parties, Ad Hoc meetings/events. Necessary info will be provided for each.
*To-date this space has been the best fit for our goals to meet in a space that is near downtown transit and bike paths, wheelchair-accessible, free, available in the 6:00-9:00 timeframe, and easy to reserve. The Northampton Police Department does not participate in meetings or guide the meeting content in any way. We recognize that a police station is not a welcoming environment for all, and we welcome suggestions for alternate locations so that the meeting location is not a barrier to participation.
City of Northampton events
Supporting local participation in decision-making is a core goal of Strong Towns Northampton. Public meetings are well advertised on the City of Northampton’s website and through other means such as City Councilor newsletters, but sharing information about upcoming meetings and background information can spur each other to show up to listen or make public comment when it matters.
